6 Web Design Mistakes That Will Ruin Your Site

Your website is most likely going to be your target audience's first impression of your brand; make it a good one!

Unfortunately, serious web design flaws will not only ruin your site, but they can also ruin your chances of converting your visitors into customers. Here are the biggest web design mistakes that you should avoid.

1. Distracting Graphics

Your audience won’t likely be “wowed” by over-the-top (flashy) graphics – especially if they are distracting or annoying. Most of your site’s visitors will probably find them cheesy, which will hurt your brand’s reputation. Therefore, when you add graphics and animations to your website, make sure that they are high-quality and relevant to what your audience is interested in. Furthermore, you should use graphics sparingly so they don’t distract your visitors from checking out your products or services.

2. Bad Color Scheme and Font Choices

When a visitor lands on your website, you want them to be able to clearly view your content – especially text. However, making poor color choices – like bright colors that clash with each other – will make it difficult for visitors to properly view your content. Therefore, your colors should be aesthetically pleasing and go well with your theme. You also need to make a good font selection and shade choice so your audience can read the text on your site.

3. Not Being Mobile-Friendly

According to Google, most web traffic is from mobile devices. Therefore, a majority of your website’s visitors will likely be mobile users as well. That’s why your site must be mobile-friendly to reach your entire target audience. If your site isn’t mobile-friendly, you will lose a lot of potential customers to your competitors.

4. Annoying Audio or Videos

As mentioned above, you want to avoid using annoying graphics on your site. You should also avoid annoying autoplay audio and/or videos. That’s because many online users won’t return to a website if it has autoplay audio or videos. However, it’s okay to embed links to audio and video messages if they are relevant to your site’s content. Then, your visitors can decide whether they want to play them.

5. Confusing Navigation

You want your website’s visitors to be able to navigate your site with ease and be able to quickly find the information that they are searching for. However, confusing navigation will not only hurt your site’s user experience, it will also hurt your conversion rate. Therefore, make it easy for your visitors to discover your content by creating a good, user-friendly site navigation. That should include a menu with clearly-labeled web page titles.

6. Slow Loading Time

Lastly, a slow download speed can ruin even the most well-designed and otherwise user-friendly websites. That’s because most visitors will leave a site that takes longer than five seconds to download. Furthermore, most of them won’t return ever again. A slow-loading website is also bad for SEO (search engine optimization). You can test your website’s speed by using one of the many free site speed tests online. Many of them will even offer you tips on how to optimize your site for faster downloads.

In short, if your website is guilty of any of these design mistakes, then you need to take the time or invest the resources into fixing it. A poor web design and user-experience will only lead to a poor conversion rate. Therefore, it’s well worth the time, effort, and money to fix your site.
